Rock Valley, Ankeny win State Championships

March 9, 2002 By admin

At the Girls’ State Basketball tournament, Rock Valley won a second straight title as the Rockets downed top ranked Hinton 62-56 for the class 1A championship. The victory for Rock Valley avenged a regular season loss to Hinton in the third game of the season. Rockets guard Deb Remmerde says both teams improved throughout the year. Remmerde who finished with a game-high 29-points on 10 of 18 shooting. Rock Valley got off to a good start offensively and scored 22-points in the opening quarter.Rock Valley coach Preston Kooima felt his team was more relaxed at the outset than Hinton. He says Hinton seemed to be tentative and they were able to take advantage of it. In class 4A, Ankeny shocked Waterloo West, winning 29-27. It was the lowest scoring championship game in five-player girl’s basketball history. West center Gillian Goring was the only player in double figures with 10 points, and she added 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots. But Goring’s performance wasn’t enough to deny Ankeny its sixth girls’ title.
