Women Legislators honor those who paved the way

March 12, 2002 By admin

A group of women legislators staged a “suffragette skit” Monday at the statehouse. The event served to commemorate “Women’s History Month” and the momentous battle to win women the right to vote.Democrat Representative Pam Jochum of Dubuque was among the group, who wore costumes from the turn of the century. She says their roots began with the suffragette movement. Jochum says modern-day women are the beneficiaries of those early suffragettes who taught them the meaning of real leadership and standing up for the rights of others when it may not be politically popular to do so.
