A House bill approved this week encourages Iowa schools to fly the American flag. State Senator Jeff Angelo of Creston is on the senate committee that made the change to the measure. The Senate’s removed House language requiring a flag, and instead mentions groups like VFW that may donate some. Angelo says the bill also allows teachers to require a moment of silence in classrooms, something he acknowledges they can do already. He thinks separation of church and state has gone overboard and bars the exercise of religion in classrooms. The silence-and-flag bill now goes to the full senate, then back to the house for approval of changes.
