Clinton lawyer pleads guilty to collecting benefits for dead mother

March 21, 2002 By admin

A Clinton lawyer has pleaded guilty to collecting his mother’s Social Security benefits for four years after she died. Fifty-six-year-old Steven Mayer was indicted in November for theft and for failing to disclose the death of his mother, Hazel. Mayer pled guilty to U-S District Court in Davenport and faces up to 10 years in a federal prison, plus he has to pay back the money and may be assessed a 250 dollar fine. In court documents, Mayer admitted he stole more than 30-thousand dollars, but less than 120-thousand from the government. Mayer remains free on bond. Hazel Mayer died in February of 1997, but Steven Mayer kept cashing her Social Security through May of last year.
