The Iowa Public Interest Research Group was quick to counter that the president’s clean-air proposal isn’t what it appears. PIRG’s Justin Hoest says the measure relaxes the clean-air regulations currently in force. He says the current Clean Air act sets more stringent caps at an earlier date, but in the future the president’s plan will allow more pollution. Hoest explains by lowering standards now in effect, the administration can write a law that’s no tougher in the future, even though it appears to be. They’ve lowered the bar and their plan is an improvement only on those lower standards.
