Historic Sioux City Stockyard about to close for good

March 26, 2002 By admin

This is the last week of sales for the historic Sioux City stockyards on the south side of Sioux City. The yards that have seen thousand of animals pass through in 115 years, will be torn down to make way for a home improvement store. Marketing Manager Roger Gaswint says Monday was the last time cows were sold at the facility. He says there were a lot of old customers who wanted to see the last sale. Monday’s sale featured around 400 head of cattle, a far cry from the stockyard’s peak days of the past.Gaswint says back in the 50s, they’d have 35 to 50-thousand feeder cattle come through on a Monday. The last sheep and feeder pig sales are today. Gaswint says it hasn’t set in for many that the yard’s going to close. The final sale for the century-old stockyard will be a private contract hog sale on Thursday.
