Governor issues ultimatum on livestock bill

April 5, 2002 By admin

Governor Tom Vilsack’s delivered an ultimatum to legislators on the livestock issue.Vilsack says if lawmakers don’t pass the bill that establishes tougher regulations for livestock operations next week, in what is scheduled to be the last week of the legislative session, he’ll call ’em back in “special session” later this spring or summer to get it done. Vilsack’s a bit frustrated with the group of 12 lawmakers who’ve been meeting privately to draft the livestock bill. He says the group has repeatedly promised to make copies of their proposal public, but it’s still under wraps.Vilsack says it’s unacceptable to delay implementation of the new regulations until sometime next year, which is something the bipartisan panel has been discussing privately.
