Governor Tom Vilsack says he’ll issue an “incomplete” grade and call lawmakers back into special session if republicans push through their budget plan and adjourn this week. Vilsack says taking so much money away from education will make an impact and is “Scary to me.”Republicans, in turn, have accused Vilsack of going on a “Scare Iowa Tour” with his complaints about their level of education spending. Vilsack’s making no apologies.Vilsack says it is scary to think that republicans intend to pass a budget that’d take away the pay raises 30-thousand veteran teachers received last year, as well as reduce salaries for 18-hundred rookie teachers. Vilsack says he hasn’t been saying anything that isn’t the truth as he says the republican budget will be harmful to the state.Vilsack’s asking legislators to shift 60-million dollars out of the state’s road construction account, and use it to finance schools.Vilsack says no family, when presented with the same dilemma, would spend their scant resources to pave a driveway rather than pay for their child’s education. Vilsack’s also calling on legislators to pass new regulations for livestock confinements, to lower the state standard for judging drunk drivers and to pass a law that’d force insurance companies to provide coverage for mental illnesses. Vilsack is calling on the legislature to work as long at it takes, “Even if you have to work on Friday, like most of us do. Even if you have to work on Saturday, like some of us do.”Legislators convened in January, but have never worked a full, five-day week.
