Plainfield Senator wins R-I’s English award

April 15, 2002 By admin

As the legislature winds down this week, it’s time for Radio Iowa news Director O.Kay Henderson to hand out her “English as a Second Language” award. The award is handed out for the biggest blooper uttered by a lawmaker, and there were several contenders this year. The 2002 winner comes from Senator John Jensen, a republican from Plainfield, who misspoke when talking about the state unit that houses violent sexual predators. His slip of the tongue is a bit too risqué to broadcast. Jensen’s good humored about winning the “English as a Second Language” award. Jensen says he slips on a lot of words, something he says “old farmers” like himself are prone to do. Jensen’s 76, and after 24 years in the legislature, he’s retiring.
