Iowa U-S Senator Charles Grassley says an energy bill nearing final approval contains several provisions favorable to Iowa interests. A 10-year-old ethanol tax credit expiring this year gets renewed and will spur the use of three times as much ethanol as we’re using now. Grassley spells out a long list of renewable energy provisions, which use a carrot rather than stick approach, to encourage use through tax credits. There will be a tax incentive for soy diesel, and there’ll be credits to help biomass projects like switchgrass burning in Ottumwa. There’s a tax incentive for producers who make electricity-producing methane gas out of animal-waste manure lagoons. Grassley says the senate energy bill also contains incentives for conservation.
