UNI could cut sports to save money

April 30, 2002 By admin

University of Northern Iowa athletic director Rick Hartzell says the school may eliminate some sports programs in the next couple of weeks. Hartzell says every possible option is being considered, but he won’t say which sports might be on the chopping block. The coach of the men’s tennis team, though, admits his program is one that faces an uncertain future. Dave Wolden says the team pondered the future of the program following this past weekend’s Missouri Valley tournament. He says they sat around for 20 minutes thinking about the future and what might happen.State budget cuts are the reason. U-N-I students face an 18-and-a-half percent tuition increase in the fall, and Hartzell says that translates into a quarter million dollar shortfall in the athletic department’s scholarship fund.
