Menace ready to kick off the season

May 2, 2002 By admin

The Des Moines Menace open the Premier Development Soccer League season this weekend at home. Laurie Calloway returns for his second year as head coach and says the P-D-L has grown in popularity because it is providing college soccer players across the country a chance to gain added experience. He says the problem in soccer is that kids are used to playing 60 games a year in youth leagues, but when they get to college they only played 20 games. This league allows them to play more games. Calloway says with only a schedule of around 20-games, college players need some added competition, as many as 45 or 50 games by the time the season is done. The Menace open this Saturday against Boulder and Calloway says that match will be one of their Open Cup qualifiers which includes all the different leagues in the country.
