Minor league football debuts this summer in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area as the Cedar Valley Vikings open play in the North American Football League. The team will play a ten-game schedule beginning in June with five home games at Waterloo’s Sloan Wallace Stadium. Former U-N-I player DeWayne Brasfield, the Vikings owner-general manager, hopes interest will grow as the season progresses. He says if they can win early, that’ll generate enough interest to keep things rolling.Brasfield believes fans will embrace summer football. He says people are looking for an entertainment outlet in the summer.Offensive lineman Duane Mathes, who’s from Tipton, says his only motivation is love of the game. Mathes believes the community getting behind the team.Former Iowa Hawkeye Willie Guy is also on the roster. The Vikings open June 15th against St.Louis.
