Toys go on display at Iowa State University this afternoon, which have been modified by engineering students for use, by children with various physical challenges. I-S-U mechanical engineering instructor Scott Openshaw says several semesters of students have worked on the toys.He says it gives the students hands-on experience in applying their skills as engineers with real-life experiences while doing community service. Openshaw says a special pedal tractor was given to a three-year-old Ankeny boy who has cerebral palsy in a ceremony at 2 o’clock this afternoon. The child couldn’t pedal by himself but now will gain some mobility. The “physical assist” toys are on display in the basement of the Black Engineering building. Many of the 90 I-S-U students who helped design and build them will also be there.
