Dubuque police warn of scam

May 16, 2002 By admin

Dubuque police are warning of a financial scam involving a company calling itself the “South Africa Mining Company” of Montreal, Canada. A resident got a letter recently saying he’d been named beneficiary of a sizeable fortune from an investment with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in South Africa. The letter offered a confidential fax number to contact, to start processing the claim — but the recipient doesn’t have any affiliation with the people or organizations in the letter. Police warn anybody who gets such a letter to ignore it, not make contact with the senders, and most important not to give out any personal information like account or credit-card numbers.
