Teen drowns near Mason City

A northern Iowa teen is dead after a weekend camping trip.The Mason City Police Department is investigating the drowning death of 17 year old John Steven Nauss. Nauss had gone camping with friends along the Winnebago River on Saturday night and the police were notified Monday morning at 12:15 that no one had heard or seen him since. Officers began investigating immediately. At approximately 2:40 Monday morning a body was found on the south side of the river a short distance from the campsite. According to Mason City Police Lieutenant Rich Jensen alcohol was involved in the incident but that final results from the autopsy are not yet available. No one saw Nauss enter the water as investigators believe everyone else might have been sleeping at the time of the incident.
