Suspicious package raises concern in Storm Lake

May 22, 2002 By admin

A suspicious package discovered in Storm Lake yesterday caused a stir.Police were dispatched to the Planned Parenthood office shortly after noon to investigate a suspicious package lying against the front of the building. Police found a manila envelope-type package containing a metal canister. Based on the contents of the package and the on-going threat to Planned Parenthood offices nationwide, police evacuated the office and blocked off the surrounding one-block area of downtown Storm Lake. Several businesses and residences were evacuated, and the nearby elementary school was placed on a lock-down status. Police investigators located a woman who had delivered the package and determined the package was legitimate in nature and didn’t pose a threat. Police re-opened the secure area to traffic about an hour after the first call. There were no injuries and no damage.
