The leaders of the three state-supported universities and the special schools for deaf and blind students are today outlining how they’ll deal with state budget cuts. University of Northern Iowa president Robert Koob says there will be sacrifices. He says cuts will hit research, public radio, distance education and outreach programs. Koob says the “under-funding” affected salaries and benefits the most. The School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs will not hold summer school and will cut days in the regular school year. The Iowa Braille School is canceling this year’s summer school, too. Iowa State and the University of Iowa are cutting programs, too. And this round of cuts will be followed by another, as legislators meet next week to pare the state budget even further.
