DOT participates in safety crackdown on trucks and buses

June 4, 2002 By admin

The Iowa D-O-T’s Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division is participating in a 72-hour effort to check commercial trucks and buses traveling the state’s roadways. Captain Ron Rumph says it’s part of an international effort to make the highways in North America safer. They’re looking for fatigued drivers, drug or alcohol impaired drivers, and safety violations in vehicle equipment. He says the Iowa effort is focused on the areas with the heaviest traffic.Rumph says they hope to get dangerous drivers and vehicles off the roadways.Drivers with violations will be taken off the road, and faulty vehicles will be pulled from the road until they’re fixed. Rumph can’t say how many trucks and buses they may check. The operation started Monday at 10 p-m and will continue until Wednesday at 10 p-m.
