Harkin says cabinet approval for Homeland Security not likely yet this Fall

June 13, 2002 By admin

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin says a measure to create a cabinet-level Homeland Security Office probably won’t be passed before Congress’ fall recess. He says the leader of the Senate wants to have the issue on the floor by the end of July, but Harkin says he’s not sure if they should move that rapidly. Harkin, a democrat, says the threat of another terrorist attack remains, but he says he’s more concerned with doing things right in creating the Homeland Security Office.Harkin says he wants to be sure that homeland security efforts don’t take away resources needed by state and local law officers.
