Boy drowns in Des Moines lake

June 19, 2002 By admin

The body of a 12-year-old boy was found this morning at Gray’s Lake in Des Moines. Maza Ahmed, part of a refugee family from the Sudan, went swimming yesterday with two other boys. Authorities say Ahmed ventured too far into deep water, and one of his pals went out to try to save him while another sought help on the shore. A 24-year-old man on the beach was able to rescue one of the kids in the water, but he says he couldn’t save Ahmed. The lake has no lifeguards and cops say the boys went to the lake by themselves on their bikes, so there was no adult supervision.
