An Iowa Army reserve unit that’s been out of the country on a homeland security mission returned to the U-S Tuesday. Army spokesman Sergeant Christopher Larson says the 339th Military Police unit is now at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
They were mobilized in January to go to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to guard Taliban and al-Qaida. Larson isn’t sure when they’ll return home.
He says their original orders called for being on active duty for 12 months, but that could be shortened. Larson says this was an unusual assignment for the Guard.
Larson says the reserve hadn’t been activated to take care of prisoners since the Gulf War. Many of the unit members are police officers in civilian life, and look forward to returning to those jobs.
The families of the soldiers are also looking forward to seeing them this weekend in Kentucky. The 105 members of the unit are from Iowa, Missouri and Illinois.
