Fluff tournament raises money for William Penn

June 24, 2002 By admin

A golf tournament in Oskaloosa today features a former William Penn golfer who gained fame as a caddy. The annual tournament is named for Mike Cowan. That might not ring a bell until you add in his nickname — “Fluff.” Fluff gained fame as a caddy on the P-G-A tour. John Eberline helped organize today’s tournament. He says in his collegiate days, Fluff led William Penn to back-to-back Iowa Conference crowns in the late 1960s, and was an N-A-I-A medalist. Fluff was Tiger Woods’ caddy when the phenom began his stellar pro golf career. Carrying Tiger’s sticks launched Fluff to a celebrity status and roles as a pitchman for various products. He now caddies for P-G-A pro Jim Furyk. Eberline says a mutual friend WHO knew Fluff got him to come back for the first tournament four years ago. The tourney raises money for William Penn sports.Eberline says the four previous tournaments have raised 100-thousand dollars. He says people who play, and those who don’t, come out to the tournament. They get to see some golf and hear a lot of stories. The tournament today (Monday) also features a youth golf clinic.
