New study says fried food could cause cancer

June 24, 2002 By admin

Most folks know fried foods are fattening but new studies suggest they could also be deadly. The World Health Organization is holding what it calls an “emergency meeting” in Geneva this week to discuss how potato chips, french fries and some bread may cause cancer. Nicole Kathman, the Iowa spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society, says more research is needed. Kathman says “not enough data exists to limit those things from your diet.” She says it’s much more important to have overall good eating habits.Eat a variety of healthy foods, more fruits, vegetables and whole grains while limiting red meat. In addition to better eating habits, Kathman says our lifestyles may make an even bigger difference in staving off cancer and other ailments. She says adults should be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day at least five times a week, while kids need an hour a day. Kathman adds, smoking puts many more people at risk of developing cancer than eating chips or french fries.
