Post Offices across Iowa will hoist a special flag today as reward for doing a good job. Jan Dorsey, consumer affairs manager for the Hawkeye District of the Postal Service that includes all of Iowa and a small part of Illinois, says the Hawkeye District has won the right to fly the “Order of the Yellow Jersey” flags after a survey of customers.The Gallup organization surveyed customers on four criteria: accurate delivery, delivery at the same time each day, courteous and friendly employees, and overall satisfaction. Dorsey says the flags symbolize the spirit of an athlete the Postal Service sponsors. The blue flags feature the Postal Service’s eagle emblem, but the eagle is colored yellow. It symbolizes the effort given by Lance Armstrong, the three-time winner of the “Tour De France” bike race. With the anthrax scare and mailbox bombings this year, Dorsey says the Postal Service has faced obstacles as tough as a mountain climb on a bike.Many post offices across the state are holding special ceremonies to raise the special flags. Editor’s note: Flag raising ceremonies are scheduled for 10 am in Des Moines, 2pm in Cedar Rapids, 3pm in Waterloo, and 5pm in the Quad Cities.
