June 26, 2002 By admin

About 100 experts will gather today in Des Moines to begin developing a cancer “control plan” for the state. Dr. George Weiner, director of the University of Iowa’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Center, says they’ll talk about successes in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer.Weiner says they’ll also identify areas for improvement.Weiner says Iowa’s not alone in the push to come up with a cancer “control” plan, as many other states are doing the same thing. The director of the Centers for Disease Control’s Cancer Prevention and Control division will attend today’s meeting. Researchers predict over 14-thousand Iowans will learn they have cancer this year, and by year’s end, over six thousand Iowans will have died of cancer.
