Stoops credits Iowa background with success

June 26, 2002 By admin

Oklahoma football coach Bobby Stoops visited Iowa this week as part of a golf fundraiser that also featured Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz, Iowa State Coach Dan McCarney and Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez. All four men share a common link of working in the University of Iowa football program under Hayden Fry. Stoops says it’s great to catch up with the men he played for and coached with. He says they talk a lot about families and other things in their lives, and don’t talk much football business.Stoops says Fry and the other three coaches were instrumental in his success.Stoops has already won a national championship at Oklahoma, but is defensive when asked if he ever kids the other more senior coaches about not winning a title. Stoops says,” I don’t have anything, the University of Oklahoma does.”He says his staff and players and the university deserve the credit. Stoops and the other coaches participated in a golf tournament to benefit Junior Achievement.
