Jury deliberations resume in Posey trial

July 2, 2002 By admin

A Quad City jury resumed deliberations this morning in the murder trial of a Davenport man, charged in the slaying of a law officer. 21-year-old Jonathan Posey faces a charge of first-degree murder in the dragging death of Master Sergeant Stanley Talbot, an Illinois State Trooper. The 50-year-old was running a safety checkpoint in Rock Island, Illinois, last June when Posey stopped, then sped away at speeds up to 50-miles an hour. Sergeant Talbot reached inside the car, possibly to get at the keys, the gearshift or Posey, and was dragged four blocks, before falling off the car. A Rock Island policeman following close behind ran over Talbot, but a medical examiner testified Talbot died of head injuries sustained in the fall, not from being hit by the pursuing squad car. If convicted, Posey faces up to 60 years in prison.
