Marshalltown’s Jeff Clement is the new national high school home run leader, hitting his 71st career round tripper last night in the second game of a double header in Mason City. Clement says he hit an 0-1 curveball that he sat back on and hit it well. Clement says the home run was one of his only good plate appearances, as he didn’t have a good night at the plate. He’s glad to have the record chase done with as he says now everyone return their focus to winning games and a state championship. Marshalltown has finished as the 4A runner-up the last two seasons.Clement says winning is more important to him than getting the record, as he says individual statistics don’t mean much. He says if he didn’t play it as a team game, then he wouldn’t do as well as he has individually.Clement will play again tomorrow night against Council Bluffs Lewis Central.
