Campers enjoy club in Forest City

July 10, 2002 By admin

A loyal band of campers gathering in Forest City call themselves the WITs…for Winnebago Itasca Travelers. There are already 400 motor homes in town for the Grand National rally of WITs, and a special sub-group of military travelers dubbed the “MIL-WITs” Tuesday dedicated a memorial to the lives lost on September 11th. On hand was Bruce Hertzke, president of Winnebago. He says the tragedy of 9-11 should never be forgotten and he praised the MIL-WITs for their monument. Hertzke says the campground can accommodate the ever-swelling ranks of WITS who come to Forest City for the rally. He says 120 campsites with electric service were added this year, and all filled. Another 20 acres by Heritage Park is already reserved and more development is planned in the southwest corner so there’ll be growing room for years. The MIL-WIT rally’s underway now and the grand WIT rally officially kicks off next week, with the year’s patriotic theme, “Salute to Freedom.” Activities will include classes for camper owners and drivers, and entertainment including country music star Lee Greenwood.
