Another fanged fish caught, second Piranha hooked in two weeks

July 11, 2002 By admin

For the second time in two weeks, an Iowa fisherman has caught an unusual fish. Tim Miraco of Grinnell says he was at the Jacob Krumm Preserve southwest of Grinnell when he made the catch. He says he threw in a line baited with a worm and caught a three-pound piranha. A fisherman from Fort Dodge hooked the one-and-a-half pound piranha last week at a city pond. Miraco put his catch in his freezer as a member of the county conservation board wants to look at it. D-N-R officials say the flesh-eating fish caught in Fort Dodge was probably somebody’s pet which they turned loose in the pond. That’s also likely the case with the fish caught in Grinnell, as piranhas are a tropical fish that couldn’t survive Iowa winters.
