Court rules against Sioux City casino

July 18, 2002 By admin

The state Supreme Court has upheld a jury award to the family of a Sioux City woman who died in a car crash after drinking at the Belle of Sioux City. A jury awarded Leticia Morales’ three children over one-point-two million dollars. The owners of the boat where she drank argued the casino isn’t subject to Iowa dram shop law assigning responsibility to businesses that let customers over-indulge in drink — her blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit at the time of her death. The Belle of Sioux City argued it should be governed by maritime laws instead, since it operates on the river, but the Court disagreed.
