Iowa City man arrested for digging holes

July 18, 2002 By admin

An Iowa City man faces charges including trespassing and criminal mischief after being caught digging grave-sized holes near Fairfield. Mark Peterson was arrested Tuesday after allegedly digging three six-foot-by-two-foot holes on private land in Jefferson County. Fairfield police, sheriff’s deputies and state D-N-R officers conducted surveillance around the clock to watch for the digger. After a week, Peterson was seen in the woods filling in the holes. Nothing was found in the holes. Stolen license plates were found after a search of Peterson’s vehicle but no explanation for the digging has been given by authorities.
