Senator Tom Harkin is pressing for more federal spending on job training programs than the President proposes. Harkin is chairman of a Senate budget sub-committee that will vote on the issue today.President Bush proposed a half-billion dollar cut in job training and dislocated worker assistance grants. Harkin says most Republicans on the committee joined with him and other democrats to reject that.The full Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to consider the proposal today. It’s included in a comprehensive bill that outlines federal spending priorities for education, medical research and health care. The bill calls for a level of spending on education that’s three times what the President has suggested.
