Newman moves on in 1A tourney

Top-ranked Mason City New open play in class 1A with a big win. The Knights scored seven runs in the sixth inning after scoring three runs each in the second, third and fifth innings to down Kingsley Pierson 17-3. Newman collected 16 hits, including two homers by Matt Wilder. Newman sets a school record of 40 victories with the win against two losses. Kingsley Pierson finishes the season at 23-10. Storm Lake-St. Mary’s defeated Martensdale-St. Mary’s 8-0 in the final 1A game of the night.Lansing Kee got three runs in the third inning and eight in the 4th to down Sidney 11-1 in five innings. North Tama outlasted Burlington Notre Dame for a 7-6 victory. The game was tied at 4 heading into the 7th. North Tama scored three runs in the top of the inning — Notre Dame scored two in the bottom, but left the tying run stranded at second base.
