Knoxville, Newman win baseball titles

The boy’s state baseball tournament wrapped up over the weekend. Mason City Newman set a record for most runs scored in a state championship game in their 18 to two victory over North Tama in the Class 1A title game. Mason City Newman coach Tony Adams says it hasn’t set in yet. Adams called the victory “unbelievable.” Junior Ben Lewerke picked up the win for Newman, pitching the first four-and-a-third innings.Newman scored 14 runs in the fourth inning. Lewerke says Newman hitters got their timing down just right.North Tama coach Matt Zoske says Newman showed why they were the top-rated Class 1-A team.Knoxville won the Class 3-A title, beating Davenport Assumption 10 to three.
