An Iowa girl has drown while swimming during a church camping trip in Minnesota. 17-year-old Jamie Christenson, of Marshalltown, was pulled under by a strong current and drown Tuesday in the boundary waters of Lake County, Minnesota, according to County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Van Kekerix Christenson was with about 50 other students from the youth group of Trinity Lutheran Church of Marshalltown. A 24-year-old canoe guide, Eric Hurst of California, tried to rescue Christensen but also drown. Both were wearing life jackets. Christenson was manager of the Marshalltown High School boys’ swim team and was a member of the girls’ swim team. Van Kekerix says the accident happened in a very secluded area that’s only accessible by canoe or kayak. The Iowa girl who died was the daughter of the president of the Marshalltown School Board, Bob Christenson. Grief counselors will be at the high school today and Friday.
