Members of Iowa State University’s Air Force R-O-T-C program ran from Des Moines to Ames this morning in honor of veterans who were held as prisoners of war or are missing in action. This is the third year I-S-U senior Mary Wendinger has run the 35-miles from the Vietnam Memorial on the statehouse grounds in Des Moines to the Iowa State campus in Ames. Wendinger says the run is done in honor of those who are still missing in action as well as those who were or are prisoners of war.Today is P-O-W/M-I-A recognition day. Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver used the occasion to tout a new program which pairs veterans with high school seniors in hopes of convincing the younger generation to vote.About a dozen states have similar programs that Culver says have boosted voting participation among 18-year-olds. Culver hopes to sign up 100 veterans who’ll visit Iowa high school classes or assemblies in the 45 days before the November 5th election.
