Cyclones favored over Huskers Saturday

September 24, 2002 By admin

It may be hard to believe but Iowa State is ranked higher than Nebraska this week in the A-P poll, and the Cyclones have been installed as a slight favorite for Saturday’s matchup with the Huskers in Jack Trice Stadium.Iowa State coach Dan McCarney says it’s shocking since Iowa State hasn’t even made a game of it with Nebraska in the years McCarney’s been in Ames.McCarney says the first chore for the Cyclones this weekend is to prove they can matchup with the Huskers. McCarney’s teams have averaged 40-point losses to Nebraska the past seven years, and McCarney says rather than having it be the “men and the boys” on the field, he hopes it’ll be the “men against the men” this weekend. McCarney says his team has to do everything it can to get off to a good start because Nebraska has “manhandled” every Cyclone team he’s thrown against them. Iowa State’s Todd Miller has been named the Big-12 special teams player of the week. Miller returned a punt 45-yards for a touchdown in the Cyclones’ victory over Troy State. McCarney says last week was the best performance by his special teams during his tenure at Iowa State.
