Iowa could gain millions for voting improvement

October 29, 2002 By admin

Iowa stands to gain millions of dollars as President Bush is expected to sign new protections against voting errors into law today. The measure gives states billions of dollars for new voting machines and for training poll workers. The changes are to be in place for the 2004 vote. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says the legislation will bring Iowa about 30-million dollars. It’ll be used to update voting technology and the registration process. Grassley says there’s something he views as even more important than preventing the types of mistakes that were made in Florida. The protections would target voter fraud, like one case in St. Louis of a dog being registered to vote. Grassley says requiring voters to show a picture I-D before they’re allowed to vote might be a good idea.
