Some Iowans throw away their vote with "Goofy" write ins

November 8, 2002 By admin

Iowans who didn’t like their choices on Tuesday’s ballot sometimes got creative. Write-in candidates are sometimes a source of amusement for election observers, and this year was no exception. Dani Dunham, Story County deputy auditor of elections, says this year’s write-in candidate list includes Daffy Duck, Goofy, Elmer Fudd and Mickey Mouse. Dunham says there were some races where write-in candidates dominated. Dunham says there were a few races which had no candidates listed on the ballot, and a write-in candidate was a voter’s only option. While Story County and many others list all the write-in candidates, larger counties like Polk list all write-ins as “scatterings” that do not have to be individually counted if they amount to less than two percent of votes cast in any single race.
