Waterloo nurse released from Indonesia

January 10, 2003 By admin

A Waterloo nurse was released from an Indonesian prison last night after serving four months for visa violations — charges she denies. Joy Lee Sadler was arrested September 11th and sentenced to four months in prison for violating her tourist visa by contacting members of the Free Aceh (uh-cheh) Movement. Both Sadler and British academic Lesley Jane McCulloch have been held in an Indonesian prison since then and were sentenced just a few weeks ago. McCulloch is expected to be released next month. Sadler, who’s H-I-V-positive, is said to be in ill health after a hunger strike and alleged beatings by her captors. Sadler says she was in Indonesia to help treat people in refugee camps, not to contact government rebels.
