Iowa comeback falls short against Ohio State in Big Ten tourney

March 13, 2003 By admin

Ohio State’s Brent Darby hit a layup with one-point-eight seconds to go and Iowa missed a desperation shot at the buzzer to fall 66-64 to the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Tournament. Iowa had rallied to tie the game on a three-pointer with 17.5 seconds to go after trailing by 12 points with just under three minutes to play. Hawkeye coach Steve Alford says his team couldn’t seem to figure out Ohio State’s zone defense.Alford was pleased with the comeback that was led by Chauncy Leslie, and says it was a matter of making shots, and the Buckeyes missed some free throws.Leslie led Iowa with 17 points, while Brody Boyd got his shooting touch back and finished 5-of-12 from three-point range for 15 points. Alford says his team will play the waiting game now to see if they get an N-I-T tournament bid.Iowa is now 15-13 overall, and exits the Big Ten Tourney early for the first time in two years, after finishing second last year, and winning the title two years ago.
