Injuries force Iowa into scrimmage instead of Spring game

April 15, 2003 By admin

In the wake of some spring practice injuries, most notably to running back Jermelle Lewis, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz considered holding a controlled scrimmage on Saturday instead of an intrasquad game. Today, Ferentz said there will be both, beginning with about an hour-long practice. He says they’ll play about one half of a game to work out some situations and let the fans see the players. Ferentz feels like the Hawkeyes have made strides this spring. He says there’s only 15 days to work so it’s important to take advantage of every practice. With Fred Russell the lone healthy tailback Ferentz doubts he will see much action.
