Iowans look to make it in the U-S Open

June 12, 2003 By admin

A pair of Iowans will tee off, today, in the opening round of the U.S. Open Golf Championship in suburban Chicago. Former University of Iowa standout Sean McCarty is making his first appearance in the open and has an early tee time at the Olympia Fields Country Club. The native of West Branch was at one time a member of the PGA tour and is currently the club pro at Brown Deer in Coralville. Jason Knutyson of West Des Moines was a standout at Iowa State and also played on the Asian Tour. Two former Iowans are also in the field. Doug Dunakey is from Waterloo and also won the Iowa Amateur championship. He was a member of the PGA tour from 1999-2001 and former Knoxville resident Sean Murphy was the 1993 Nike tour player of the year. All four will try to make the cut on Friday and move on to the weekend.
