ISU Ag Dean chairs national food board

The dean of Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture can add a line to her resume. Catherine Woteki has been appointed chair of the U.S. Food and Nutrition Board. Woteki will serve a three-year term on the panel, which is part of the National Academy of Sciences.The board establishes recommended dietary allowances, the levels of nutrients conducive to good health, what most of us see on the labels of cans or on cereal boxes. Woteki says the board also studies issues surrounding the safety and adequacy of the nation’s food supply.Woteki has served on the Food and Nutrition Board since 1998 and assumed her chairperson role this month. The board is made up of scientists with expertise in nutrition, food science, biochemistry, medicine, public health, epidemiology, food toxicology and food safety.
