July 2, 2003 By admin

An investigation shows the Clayton County Sheriff’s gun was used by an acquaintance to commit suicide. 18-year-old Michael Bengston of McGregor died June 14th of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation by Mar-Mac Police determined that Bengston used a handgun owned by Clayton County Sheriff Robert Hamann (Hah-man). Hamann and Bengston’s mother have an ongoing relationship and Hamann says the teen knew he kept his gun above his refrigerator when not on duty. Hamann says the department does not a have a policy about storing weapons when officers are off duty.
