Nearly 60 boys and girls basketball teams ranging from fourth graders to graduated seniors will take to the court beginning tomorrow for a tournament in the town of Pella. The event is sanctioned by Mid-America Youth Basketball, an organization which includes four-thousand teams from 23 states.Tournament director Al Carlson says the events have been around since the 80s’. He says the M-A-Y-B events are becoming more popular because they offer more games than most other tournaments. The teams are placed in pools of five teams each and play each other, and then enter a single elimination bracket, so most teams play at least five games. Carlson says the games will be held on the Central College campus and the action begins in the morning. Carlson says 58-teams are registered to take part in the tournament, which is in its second year. He expects the tournament to be even bigger next year. HE says the goal is to have 80 to 100 teams. The tournament will run through the weekend.
