While most people tried to retreat from last week’s heat and humidity, some things thrived in it. The state Agriculture Department’s weekly report says the warm, humid weather pushed the corn crop to grow as much as sixteen inches this past week. The corn condition rated four percent poor or very poor, 14 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 26 percent excellent. Soybeans were rated four percent very poor or poor, 16 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 23 percent excellent. The report does say storms occurring late last week across northern Iowa resulted in scattered reports of damage to oats and created some leaning corn. It also says southern Iowa reported a need for more rain.
