One of the activities surrounding the upcoming Allianz Tournament in West Des Moines is a junior Pro-Am tournament. It gives 36 junior golfers the opportunity to play nine holes with a Champions Tour member on the Glen Oaks Country Club course that will host the Allianz. Christy Athas was coming off her senior season at Eldora-New Providence when she played the Pro-Am last year. They played with pro Terry Mooney and she says he helped them all with their swings and later gave her a 45 minute lesson on her short game. She calls it “an incredibleexperience.” Athas says she wasn’t nervous to be playing with someone who had been on the PGA Tour and then the Champions Tour, as she looked forward to learning from them. Athas says the Pro-Am taught her some lessons about the game, such as golf is extremely fun. She says it was also interesting to hear from someone who’s made taken golf from a game to a career. He told her it gets tough now and then as you’re making your living and have to succeed to survive.Athas will play golf in college at Iowa State University and plans on trying again this year for one of the amateur spots in the Pro-Am. You have to submit an essay on a certain topic. The Pro-Am is sponsored by Wells Fargo, and a panel from the company will judge the essays and notify the winners the week of August 4th.
